The Vamps - Somebody To You Analysis

Narrative and Performance
In my opinion this video is around 30% narrative and 70% performance. This narrative is shown by the boys wanting to get with the girls, which is what ends up happening in final shots. the video is predominantly performance based as they are constantly performing on a small stage on the beach. This is also emphasized by the fact that they are performing in front of a crowd, something which is common in pop music videos.

Locations
This video in particular conations a variety of different locations, however they are all in close proximity to each other. These include the shot of the girls further down the beach, the lead singer on a separate section of the beach, small stage where the band are performing, football area, seating/bench area, swimming pool, Demi Lovato on the beach, Demi on the car, plus a few other minor locations.

Mise-en-scene
This includes the band playing their instruments, something which is part of the performance montage. Furthermore, the clothing is a contrast with the setting, as the background has bright natural lighting, whereas their clothing makes them seem more like a rock band (black leather jackets and skinny jeans). Them smiling in the music video represents common themes with pop video conventions.

Camera angles
The video features the common angles such as high and low, close ups, medium shots etc. However, in this video a worms eye is used in the swimming pool scene, an angle which is less common. Plus, an over the shoulder shot which then turns into a POV of the lead singer, an establishing shot of the beach with artist names at the very beginning, a lens flare when the light source is behind the girls. Also, when the say 'Yeah You', they are pointing at the camera, possibly either directly speaking to us or the girl.

Editing
There are 17 cuts in the first 30 seconds of the video, and when the bridge of the songs starts we see a fade instead of a cut. Moreover, Demi Lovato's shots have the edges of the screen blurred, diegetic sound is used during the establishing shots via the waves and possibly when the lead singer is laughing, however it could be argued that this is part of the song.

Comments

  1. A great analysis of this music video. In your next analysis try to develop your use of terminology even further and focus on genre (how is this pop?)
